Messi the perfect combination of Xavi

Messi had already been with Barcelona for four years, had played one friendly in the first team and there were rumours that he might be something special. But he was barely known in Argentina, who called him up with the aim of having a look at him - he was, for example, not given the symbolic number 10 shirt.

He looked unimpressive as he took the field, small, pale and shambling. But as soon as he was on the ball all of us there knew we were witnessing something special.

He was only 17, a couple of years younger than almost everyone else, and he found the competition's gruelling calendar hard going.

But the talent was unmistakable. As Diego Maradona commented, Messi's close control is so abnormally good that he can run with the ball while watching TV - he has now reached a level where could probably change the channels as well. Read More

Scott Sinclair's hat-trick booked Swansea's first return to the top-flight since 1983 after beating Reading in the Championship play-off final.

Sinclair scored twice in two minutes, the first a penalty, then a close-range strike after Nathan Dyer's cross. It looked over for Reading when Stephen Dobbie made it 3-0, but the Royals struck back through a Joe Allen own goal and a Matt Mills header.

Sinclair then sealed it with his second spot-kick to send Swans fans delirious. Read More

Sundown Marathon 2011 Ultra Marathon Athletic Singapore

Sundown Marathon 2011 ; This morning marks the completion of my third full marathon, with a net timing of 4 hours 52 minutes. This time, the organisers decided to bring forward the starting time by two hours to 10 pm, making it inconvenient for participants to leave the event venue after the race. Getting to the event site at Changi Exhibition Centre took quite some time, as the traffic congestion started building up all the way to Changi Village. Earlier editions of the Sundown marathon started at Changi Village instead.

Before the flag off, participants were dazzled by colourful strobe lights at the starting point. However, I would probably end up dizzy if these flashes continued! The race started in front of Changi Exhibition Centre, and brought participants through a relatively flat Changi Coastal Road and East Coast Park. Other than the first and last three kilometres, the scenery mainly comprised trees and cyclists. This made the route somewhat boring, especially in comparison with Sundown Marathon 2009 – which included urban and physical obstacles such as overhead bridges in the second half and undulating terrain near the end.

The weather was somewhat warm and humid, which can be felt along Changi Coastal Road. Water points were conveniently located every two kilometres apart, with signs reading ‘Hydration Station Ahead’ placed some 200 metres before the station. This time, participants may miss the energy gel station as it was located in a dark zone after a bend without any sponsor banners. Towards the end of the route, some volunteers (who reported to the site as early as 4 pm) were already sitting down or lying flat on the ground to catch some rest after standing for more than ten hours. However, as the starting times for the different categories were staggered, there was no congestion encountered.  Read More

sudirman cup 2011 final live, 苏迪曼杯, 林丹, 羽毛球

BWF Sudirman Cup 2011: China And Denmark Meet In Final ; Few expected the lone European nation in the last 8 to reach the final against the home nation of China. Their 3-1 victory over Indonesia was done again without the help of the #1 pair in the world for men’s doubles, as Boe and Mogensen succumbed to another defeat this week.

The first semi final seen the host nation take on Korea, the nation that defeated China in last year’s Uber Cup. The first match set the tone for the entire semi final as Xu and Ma took on Ko and Ha in a brutal 71 minute encounter that Korea had four chances to win the match and failed to deliver. The Chinese pairing had just one in the deciding game and took their opportunity to steal the victory from the Korean’s and but China 1-0 up.

Lin Dan doubled the host nations advantage with a convincing 21-16, 21-10 victory to put China within one match of the final. Cai and Fu took on their rivals Lee and Jung for the 13th time, with the head to head being level at 6-6. Lee and Jung had won the previous two matches and made it a third consecutive victory over Cai and Fu in their 62 minute encounter to pull the tie back to 2-1. Wang Shixian was given the chance to redeem herself after her opening match loss to Juliane Schenk in the 4th match of the tie, against Bae Youn Joo. It took 50 minutes but the Chinese were through the the final with Wang Shixian’s two game victory securing the 3-1 victory for China.

The second semi final started almost exactly the way of the first semi final, with the opening mixed doubles match going all the way to a third and deciding game. Fischer Neilsen and Pedersen were dominant in the decider and took the opening match for the Danes in a 63 minute match against Teng and Bernadeth. Peter Gade doubled the advantage with a tight two game victory over Simon Santoso, winning 21-18, 21-16 in 44 minutes.

The Danish pair of Boe and Mogensen have been the weak link this week, losing both of their matches to date. They had a third chance to win this week against the pair of Chandra and Ahsan but again struggled to produce any of the form that made them into the top partnership in the world and tamely lost 23-21, 21-17 to cut Indonesian deficit in half. It was left to Tine Baun to clinch a place in the final against Adriyanti Firdasari, their first meeting in almost two years. Tine Baun duely delivered a superb performance to win 21-13, 21-13 to book Denmark’s place in the final.

Tomorrow’s final will be won and lost with the men’s events. Can Boe and Mogensen regain any sort of form to defeat Cai and Fu in the men’s doubles? Can Peter Gade roll back the years and defeat Lin Dan for only the 4th time in their 16th meeting? Tine Baun will undoubtably needed to defeat one of the Chinese women in the singles if Denmark have any chance of winning the final. The Chinese are almost certain of winning the women’s doubles should Wang and Yu play. Meaning they only have to win 2 of the other 4 events to retain the Sudirman.  Read More

f1 red flag, michael schumacher, monaco gp f1 2011

Schumacher a Beneficiary of Red Flag in Monaco Qualifying ; Michael Schumacher admitted that he benefited ‘a little’ from the red flags brought out after the accident for Sergio Perez during qualifying for tomorrow’s Monaco Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion qualified fifth today – his best Saturday result of the season so far – but suspects that P7 would have been a more realistic grid position if it was not for the long delay as marshals cleared the stricken Sauber.

“First of all, I am happy to hear that Sergio seems to be well, which is obviously the most important news,” said Schumacher. “The incident reminded me a lot of what happened to Karl Wendlinger in 1994 and it shows the quality of the safety improvements the FIA have implemented since then, especially the side impact tests.

“As for my starting position, I benefited a little from the circumstances and probably P7 on the grid would have been more realistic. Having said that, our car looks better in race trim this weekend, so with another good start, I will try to make the most out of it.
“Overtaking is known to be more difficult here than at most other circuits, so it will come down to having the right strategy, especially because the tyres should last longer than in recent races and we can expect fewer stops. I think it will be an exciting race.”

The other Mercedes of Nico Rosberg had an accident similar to that of Perez‘s this morning in free practice, but narrowly missed the barrier that the Sauber driver collided with this morning. However, Rosberg missed all of qualifying and had to rely on frantic work from his mechanics in order to participate in qualifying at all. He finished qualifying in eighth place.

“I have to say a special thank you to the team and the attitude everybody had today after my accident,” said Rosberg. “This morning, I made a little mistake and lost control of the car but nobody was angry about that when I came back to the garage: the guys simply came up to me and said, let’s go for it in qualifying!

“The circumstances in Q3 were a bit tricky because the red flag came at the worst moment for me. When we went back out, it was not possible to do a fast lap because the tyres weren’t working properly, but I am still happy to have made it to Q3 after such a tough day. I also want to send my best wishes to Sergio and we are all pleased to hear that he is ok after such a big accident.”

Ross Brawn was reasonably happy with the qualifying performance, especially considering the challenges thrown at the team today. He also paid tribute to the safety of modern F1 after Perez’s accident.  Read More

UEFA Champions League Final Highlights 2011, Barcelona Vs Manchester United Results, Wembley Final 2011

UEFA Champions League Final: Barcelona Show For The Ages
The 2011 Champions League Final, watched by the world's eyes, did not disappoint on Saturday as Barcelona completed the 90 minutes with a 3-1 win over Manchester United. The first half began and for the opening fifteen minutes it looked as though Manchester United's home advantage (English team playing on the English turf of Wembley) was going to pay dividends as they poured on the pressure and put the Barcelona back-line - containing Abidal and Mascherano - on the back-foot with direct balls up to Rooney and Hernandez.

The attacking endeavours of United, however, didn't reap any rewards and as the clock ticked through to the 15 minute mark, Barcelona suddenly flipped the switch and activated 'Massacre mode'. It's a mode they've been stuck in a for a large part of their domestic season and for the majority of the Champions League and for Manchester United, the second fifteen minutes of the match were experienced whilst in a state of fear - fear at the impending onslaught at the hands of the Spanish outfit.

Following near misses from midfielder Pedro (he was able to ghost in at the near post only to put the ball wide from 7 yards out) and from star striker David Villa, Barcelona watched on in disbelief as their warning shots went unheeded. On 27 minutes, Barcelona showed United and the watching world exactly what they were capable of as a beautiful defence splitting ball from Xaxi found Pedro whose solid finish sent Van Der Sar the wrong way.

Despite conceding an opener to Barca, Manchester United didn't throw in the towel, not even against a Barcelona team with a squad of players who wouldn't be out of place in a DC comic and in the 34th minute their resilience paid off. Taking a note out of Barcelona's 'Pass-pass-pass-pass-pass-shoot-score' book, a series of tight passes and one-twos eventually found Rooney at the penalty spot who applied a tidy finish to a Hernandez pass. That finish signaled United's intent and for the remainder of the half, they made Barcelona look human - something the Catalan club hadn't experienced very often.

At half time and at 1-1, the game was surprisingly even. United had spells where they made Barcelona uncomfortable and likewise, Barca had shown glimpses of what they could do to United given a little time and space. In the second half though, United and the estimated 400million worldwide audience would have front row seats to watch possibly the greatest club team in recent memory, tear apart the Premier League champions. He said: “I have to say thanks to to the Executive Committee of FIFA because for 2018 and 2022 we go to new lands, because the FIFA World Cup has never been in eastern Europe or the Middle East. So, I'm a happy president when we speak of the development of football.

"But I have to give big compliments to all the bidders for the big job they have done and the messages they have delivered. All have delivered the message that football is more than just a game. Football is not only about winning; it is also a school of life where you must learn to lose, and that is not easy.”

England, Netherlands and Belgium, Spain and Portugal, and Russia all submitted bids for the right to stage the 2018 finals. Both England and Spain are previous FIFA World Cup hosts, with the 1966 tournament on English soil ending in the Three Lions' only world crown to date.
